Our Workforce
People and the skills they bring to the community are an essential part of community economic development. Developing a skilled workforce is an important role for each local Enterprise Agency.
The service sector is the largest employer in the Fundy region. Wholesale and retail constitute the highest single source of employment, and health and social services are the second highest employer. Construction industries and transportation are third and fourth in importance as service sector employment creators in the Fundy Enterprise Region.
Population
According to the 2001 Census, the population of the Fundy region was 48,071. Ninety percent of the population was concentrated in the areas and communities within 25 minutes commuting distance of Saint John, Moncton and the Town of Sussex.
Population growth has been most pronounced in those areas close to existing community services and to urban-based jobs. Availability of jobs, commuting time and distance from urban jobs and services has constrained the growth of several rural areas across the Region.
The Fundy Region has many families living in the rural areas while commuting to urban jobs, services and educational facilities. In the outlying areas next to Moncton, Saint John and Sussex, the distinction between rural and urban has become very blurred.
Education
For the Fundy Region, almost 46% of the working age population had undertaken postsecondary education (completed or not). Overall, of those with postsecondary education, over 57% had training in either engineering and applied technologies and trades, or commerce, management and business administration. Of males with postsecondary qualifications, 60.4% had a major field of study in the engineering and applied science technologies and trades. Of those females with postsecondary qualifications, over 16% had major fields of study in commerce, management and business administration, and over 18% were qualified in health professions, sciences and technologies.
Family Income
With an average of $44,617 Kings-Albert family incomes lag the provincial average of $48,527. The family income of single parent families in Kings-Albert, is $24,460, which exceeds the provincial average of $23,762.
Married and Common law family incomes vary widely from one sub-region to another, ranging from $51,650 in the Saint John centered area to $38,888 in Fundy Coast. Similarly single parent family incomes range from a high of $28,242 in the Saint John centered region to a low of $19,606 in the Moncton centered sub-region.
